Watercolors for Lord Macartney's embassy, 1792-1794.

The first volume contained two main sequences of British watercolours, initialled by T.H. and H.W.P., originally bound into a portfolio. The first sequence depicts coastal scenes painted and captioned in English by T.H. aboard "The Hindostan" between October 10, 1792 and February 1, 1793. Most are carefully observed sketches of the coasts of Tenerife and Brazil. The last sketch is of the Island of St. Paul, presumably on the homeward voyage back to England. The second series, by H.W.P., also depict coastal views of Brazil, and also of some Atlantic islands. There is also a pencil and charcoal drawing of a bird and a Chinese coastal scene in watercolor. The second volume contains a sequence of similar paintings, again by the artist T.H., were painted aboard "The Hindostan" between October 25, 1794 and December 31, 1794. This sequence also depicts coastal views of Tenerife, Brazil, and the islands of the Tristan da Cunha group.

A member of an old Scots-Irish family, Macartney studied at Trinity College (M.A., 1759) in Dublin. He was knighted and appointed envoy extraordinary to Russia in 1764 and, on his return, entered Parliament, becoming chief secretary for Ireland (1769-72). In 1775 he became governor of the Caribbee Islands (Grenada, the Grenadines, and Tobago), being created an Irish baron in 1776, and from 1780 to 1786 he served as governor of Madras.
